Gerd Hänska was a true Berlin architect. When u take the U1 to a Kottbusser Tor you pass by a whole neighborhood that was planned by him. He also is the creator of one of the most iconic, unique and controversial buildings in West Berlin – the “Mäusebunker”. It’s main purpose was animal experimentation and the „production“ of the living material needed for that. The blue ventilation pipes are an indicator of how controlled the environment for that kind of program has to be. There were problems from the beginning. The budget tripled, so did the construction period. It was never really completed, the last part at the back was just left out. Now it lies almost empty, needs refurbishment desperately and the owner actually wants to demolish it. I can understand the problems, the complexity of pros and cons and don’t really have a satisfying answer. But I just love this building and hope that there will be a different solution than it’s disappearance.
